Greece Welcomes Record-Breaking Tourist Numbers in 2024

Greece has experienced a surge in international tourism this year, with arrivals surpassing pre-pandemic levels. Between January and August 2024, the country welcomed over 27.7 million visitors, a nearly 10% increase compared to the same period in 2023.

Air Arrivals Soar
Greek airports have been particularly busy, with international arrivals reaching 18.9 million during the first eight months of the year. Athens International Airport (AIA) saw a significant 13.3% increase in arrivals, while regional airports experienced a 6% rise. The Peloponnese, Dodecanese islands, and Crete led the way in terms of growth, while the Cyclades saw a slight decline.

Road Arrivals Break Records
Road arrivals have been a major contributor to Greece’s tourism success. From January to August 2024, road arrivals reached 8.8 million, surpassing the previous record of 8.6 million set in 2019. The Kyprinos checkpoint on the Greek-Turkish border has seen a remarkable 190.9% increase in vehicle entries.

Tourism Revenue Continues to Climb
Greece’s tourism revenue has also been on the rise, with a 5.6% increase in the January-July period compared to 2023. This growth is a testament to the country’s popularity as a tourist destination.
